History of 227 Capitol Street
Warner Law Offices is located in one of the most historic buildings in Charleston, West Virginia. The building is over 118 years old. The structure was erected in 1891 with Queen Anne-Renaissance style features, pressed brick and Victorian turrets. Initially, a clothing store named Gentry’s rented the location. Gentry’s was in business for more than 20 years. In 1914, W.D. and George W. Scott opened the Scott Brothers Drug Store in the building. The brothers kept an apartment on the third and fourth floors and would come down each day for work.

For decades, Charleston residents would stop at the drug store and soda fountain for their favorite treat. A visit to the West Virginia State Museum uncovered what a customer might find on the menu during this time. Here are some of the prices found on the 1931 Scott Brothers Drug Store menu:

The Scott Brothers Drug Store was at this location until the early 1950’s. After the drug store was closed, the First Empire Federal Savings and Loan Association bought the building. The FEFSLA occupied 227 Capitol Street from 1951-1996. In 1996, the Bailey and Glasser law firm purchased the building. In 2008, Bailey and Glasser relocated and the building became vacant.
During the 1990’s, 227 Capitol Street was home to Bailey and Glasser, a law firm in Charleston, WV.

In July of 2009, Warner Law Offices purchased the building. Attorney Robert Warner renovated the building while keeping the original woodwork and layout intact. Today, 227 Capitol Street remains one of the cornerstones of downtown Charleston, West Virginia.

The building is also the headquarters of Beyond The Backyard, a Bobby Warner charitable youth foundation geared toward getting children more involved in the outdoors. The organization has over 5,000 members in West Virginia.
Beyond The Backyard was established in 2008 to increase the amount of children involved in outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and camping.

BOBBY WARNER GETS KIDS 'BEYOND THE BACKYARD'
Youth Foundation will get West Virginia Children more Involved in the Outdoors
Charleston attorney Bobby Warner is launching a charitable youth foundation that is geared toward getting West Virginia children more involved in hunting, fishing and camping. Beyond The Backyard is an organization that will introduce kids to the outdoors through events that will be held across the state of West Virginia. The foundation was created by Warner in response to a troubling national trend that shows fewer children are participating in outdoor activities.
"Every headline that I read about hunting and outdoor participation remains the same," said Warner. "Hunting numbers continue to decline each year. This foundation is aimed at improving those numbers by reaching out to West Virginia's youth."
Those who are close to Warner know that he is very passionate about the outdoors. His television commercials, website, corporate logo and letterhead for Warner Law Offices all have an outdoor theme. He has embraced the outdoors not only as a hobby, but as a lifestyle.
"People ask me all the time why I produce those hunting commercials," said Warner. "I embrace the fact that I am an avid outdoorsman and that aspect of our advertising is exactly who we are as a law firm."
Membership for Beyond the Backyard is totally free. As a member, children will receive a quarterly newsletter, access to an interactive website and become eligible to participate in writing and art competitions where selected winners will have the opportunity to go on all expense paid hunting and fishing trips. The organization will hold seminars, conduct youth hunting and fishing outings and work closely with parents to give them the tools needed to get their children involved in a multitude of outdoor pursuits.
"Parents will drive this foundation," said Warner. "We want the parents to be as involved in the entire process as the children are. At the end of the day, if more kids are hunting, fishing and camping with their families in West Virginia, I will look back at this foundation and say that it was a success."
BOOSTER SEAT EVENT
West Virginia Attorney Gives Booster Seats to Families in Need
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration designated Child Passenger Safety Week, September 20 to September 27, 2008. Warner Law Offices sponsored a "Seat Check Saturday" event that was held on September 20 in the Trace Fork parking lot in Charleston. This event was co-sponsored by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety and the CAMC Foundation. At the event, which was free to the public, people were taught how to properly use child passenger restraints and were encouraged to discard old, defective child restraint equipment. The purpose of the event was to educate the public about child passenger safety and help prevent any defective or recalled child passenger equipment from falling into the hands of West Virginia families. One booster seat that was discarded at the event was 21 years old.
Warner Law Offices plays an important role in educating West Virginia families about child passenger safety. Charleston attorney Bobby Warner has represented hundreds of individuals, including many children, who have been injured in automobile accidents. Sadly, many of the accidents result in serious injuries or fatalities. After discovering that many children do not ride in a proper booster seat and that many of these unfortunate events are preventable, Warner took action.
"I handled a case a few years ago where a child was fatally injured in an auto accident due to the improper use of a booster seat. After that case I decided to start the program," said Warner. "We want to assist underprivileged families by giving them booster seats so their children are safe while on West Virginia's highways."
Since starting the program a year ago, Warner has given nearly 100 West Virginia families booster seats. Warner Law Offices' television campaign devotes half of its advertising to the booster seat program and child passenger safety. Unfortunately, many parents do not use child passenger restraints properly. According to NHTSA, four out of five children are improperly secured on our nation's highways.
"Safety is our top priority at Warner Law Offices," said Warner. "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 8,325 children's lives have been saved by the proper use of child restraints over the past 30 years in the United States. We want to continue to play an active role in the community by helping families in need keep their children safe."
