Neck and Back Injuries

Neck injuries are primarily caused by some type of fall or accident. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the most common type of neck injury in the United States is whiplash and is usually the result of an automobile accident. Other common neck injuries include nerve damage, disc damage, ruptured ligaments, fractures of the vertebrae, and spinal cord injuries. Some neck injuries result in temporary injury, however neck injuries that are more severe can lead to total paralysis of the trunk and limbs. Depending on the severity of one's neck injury, neck immobilization and rehabilitative efforts may be necessary for months or even years following the original injury.

Back injuries usually result from sports injuries, daily work, or a sudden jolt from something like a car accident. The back contains complex systems of muscles, bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels. The back bears much of our weight and enables the body to stand. Back injuries are commonly reported to physicians. The majority of people who suffer from back injuries are able to heal quickly, however some stay impaired for months, years, or permanently. Common causes of back injuries are twisting or pulling the torso suddenly, improper or repetitive lifting, sports injuries, auto accidents, work-related incidents, falls, acts of violence, or other repetitive stress.

The most frequent type of back injuries are strains, sprains, herniated discs, and fractures. Symptoms of back injuries include pain which gets worse with movement; uncontrollable cramping or spasm of the muscles; reduced range of motion or decreased function such as trouble bending, standing straight, or walking. Serious back injuries may require surgery.
