West Virginia holiday DUI crackdown seeks to curb crashes

Police agencies in the northern panhandle of West Virginia are once again conducting their "holiday blitz" in an effort to deter drinking and driving. The operation is conducted in an effort to catch drunk drivers before they cause a serious car wreck, injuring themselves or other people. In addition to sobriety check points, there will be extra officers on the road paid for by a grant. Free cab rides are offered for anyone living within a 10 mile radius of the place they have been drinking.

The West Virginia Highway Safety Program says the effort has already begun. Patrolling officers are focusing on driving under the influence enforcement and speeding violations. In years past, the program has yielded positive results.

Authorities want to get the word out that the program is under way in the hopes that it will deter those imbibing during the holidays from getting behind the wheel of a car after they have been drinking. Everyone deserves to have a safe and happy holiday season, but no one has the right to put other people's lives in danger by driving drunk. Thousands of lives are lost each year around the country due to impaired drivers. Authorities are certainly not suggesting that people can't drink; however, they are saying that they shouldn't drive afterward.

Drunk drivers cause thousands of accidents each year, and too many of those accidents involve serious injuries or even death. Anyone who finds themselves a victim of an accident involving a drunk driver may want to seek the advice and assistance of an attorney. Medical bills, funeral expenses, lost wages and other similar expenses can add up quickly. Accident victims or their families should not have to bear those burdens alone when means of redress are open to them.
