People in Charleston love the freedom that comes from riding a motorcycle, but sometimes a ride can end in tragedy due to the dangerous driving of others on the road. In one recent tragedy, a Virginia man was killed in an accident after a driver of a truck crashed into his motorcycle. According to the Virginia State Police, the driver in the truck was allegedly speeding down an interstate when he struck and killed the motorcyclist.
Authorities have charged the speeding driver in the fatal motorcycle crash with a DUI and involuntary manslaughter. This is not the first time the driver has been charged with a driving-related crime. The man has a previous conviction for a DUI. It is unclear at this time if the family of the motorcycle accident victim intends to bring a wrongful death claim against the driver. Such a lawsuit would be a civil action, separate from the criminal charges the driver currently faces.
Motorcyclists can suffer catastrophic injuries because of the actions of negligent drivers, causing brain injuries, broken bones, or even death. A motorcycle accident can occur in a blink of an eye if a distracted or negligent driver fails to yield to the motorcyclist or does not see the motorcycle. For those who have been injured or have lost a loved one in a motorcycle accident, you do not have to navigate the aftermath of the accident by yourself. Consider contacting a personal injury attorney who handles motorcycle accidents to make sure you understand your rights.
