Spinal cord injury can affect any person in West Virginia

When a vehicle accident takes place, people who hear that a loved one has been injured may imagine common injuries such as lacerations or broken bones. However, spinal cord injury also can happen and change the victim's life forever. This type of injury can easily cause paralysis and may even lead to incontinence in some cases, thus affecting a person's quality of life on a long-term basis in West Virginia.

A traumatic injury such as a spinal injury or brain injury doesn't discriminate. It can affect the life of a person of any gender, race, ethnicity, income level or geographical location. A spinal cord injury can be either permanent or semi-permanent and can happen due to a vehicle wreck or an explosion, among other potential causes.

When one person experiences this type of trauma, many other people in the community play a critical role in helping them to deal with it. For example, paramedics initially help to address it, followed by trauma physicians in the emergency room and primary care doctors. Family and friends also can help the person to deal with the aftermath of the tragedy.

Sometimes, a spinal cord injury happens because another motorist on the road wasn't paying attention and ended up striking an individual. In other cases, it happens because a person failed to safely maintain his or her private premises, thus causing a serious injury accident. If someone else is at fault in such a situation and there is a preponderance of evidence proving this, it is within the right of the injured party to seek monetary relief for related damages. Liability needs to be established to the civil court's satisfaction in West Virginia before claims for financial damages will be determined in favor of the victim.
