Chia powder may be a defective product due to possible Salmonella

More than 20 people have consumed chia powder recently and have fell ill afterward. Apparently, they have been infected with Salmonella. Chia powder has now been deemed a defective product for consumers in West Virginia and across the nation.

Through collaborative investigations, various health agencies have determined the potential cause of the Salmonella outbreak. They seem to believe that the contamination source is from chia powder that was made from sprouted chia seeds that were grown organically. Chia powder does not become powder without first grinding up dried chia seeds.

Health Matters America Inc. introduced their first recall for their chia products on June 4. Two days later, Navitas Naturals expanded their initial recall. This was to include various products that had been manufactured with organically-sprouted chia seeds. The problem isn't just in the United States because Canada has reported issues as well. Numerous companies in Canada have issued their own recalls.

Chia products have an extended shelf life. Therefore, it is important to not use any chia products in the home that are part of the recall. Consumers using chia products should stop using them immediately to avoid the risk of developing a Salmonella infection.

Chia seed powder products are not the only defective products in West Virginia and the rest of the United States. There are many others and they can include anything from auto defects to unsafe car seats. When a defective product harms someone in any way, there may be legal options that can be taken by the victim. One may be able to file a claim for damages related to the defective product to receive compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses and more.
