Traumatic brain injury can have emotional, physical effects

Traumatic brain injury results in a large number of disability and death cases each year throughout the United States, including in West Virginia. Researchers say that traumatic brain injury plays a role in about 33 percent of all deaths related to injuries in America. In addition, about three-fourths of these injuries are deemed to be types of mild brain injury or concussions.

Those who have the highest chances of sustaining injuries to the brain are adults above 65 years old as well as teens between 15 and 19 years old. Also, young children are prone to these types of injuries. A brain injury can stem from a blow, jolt or bump to one’s head or by a penetrating injury that causes the brain to function improperly.

A brain injury can lead to neuropsychological disturbances, such as hard-to-notice deficits or even major emotional and intellectual disturbances. A person might experience moodiness, behavior issues and even cognitive impairments as a result of traumatic brain injuries. Other side effects of brain injuries include psychosis and anxiety.

Both rehabilitative interventions and drug therapy may be necessary to help a person live as normally as possible in light of his or her brain injuries. When a person suffers a traumatic brain injury victim due to another individual’s negligence in West Virginia, the injured party has the right to legally seek the reimbursement of financial losses sustained in the incident. If the victim is victorious in his or her personal injury claim, the compensation awarded may help to pay for continual medical and even psychiatric care required to address the life-transforming injury.
