Spinal cord injury can cause loss of sexual function

People who are involved in accidents that lead to spinal cord injuries may be worried about no longer having feeling in the lower part of their bodies. This can affect their ability to walk and even to have sex, which may be particularly disappointing for men in West Virginia. However, a new device may be able to restore the sexual abilities of a person who has suffered a spinal cord injury resulting in a paralysis.

As part of a recent study, a man who had previously been prescribed Viagra found the pill to be ineffective, resulting only in a significant headache. However, a new electrical stimulator that was implanted in the man's spine helped him to be able to have sex again. The man said regaining the ability to have sexual intercourse was major in his life.

Three additional men received this electrical stimulator as well, and each said the stimulator improved his sex life. The men had different levels of dysfunction related to sex. The new development is drawing attention to the need for more research into how to restore not just the ability to walk, but also secondary conditions, including bladder control and sexual function, in those with spinal cord injuries.

Incontinence stemming from a spinal cord injury can negatively affect people’s relationships and their self-esteem in West Virginia. When a person’s life changes unfavorably because of a spinal cord injury linked to a car accident that was not his or her fault, the injured person has the right to file a claim against the party deemed responsible for the crash. The other party’s liability has to be established sufficiently before the court will decide the victim’s claims for financial damages.
