Spinal cord injury happens due to blow to head, neck or back

The ability to walk and run can be snatched away in an instant when a tragic car accident happens in West Virginia or elsewhere. This is because spinal cord injuries can keep an individual from being able to move his or her lower extremities and even cause incontinence. About 250,000 individuals are currently living with spinal cord injury in America.

About 11,000 individuals suffer from this type of injury every year across the country. Spinal cord injuries typically occur because of a significant blow to a person's back, neck or head. This results in a fracture or dislocation of the vertebrate.

The spinal cord has many nerves that carry impulses from and to the brain and other areas of the body. The brain and spinal cord are part of the central nervous system. If the spinal cord is injured, the system is affected, often leading to physical impairment. Most of these types of injuries are the result of car crashes or sports-related accidents. Physical violence, falls and disease can also cause spinal cord injuries.

When spinal cords are injured, victims may experience secondary complications, including pain, heart and respiratory issues and bowel and bladder dysfunction. Other common problems are infections of the urinary tract, scoliosis and pressure sores. If the injuries happened because someone else was negligent in such a way as to cause or contribute to an accident or fall in West Virginia, then the injured party can rightfully sue for monetary damages. The court will rule in favor of the victim if liability is established by appropriate evidence of negligence, typically resulting in a monetary judgment for the damages caused by the spinal cord injury.
