Defective products designed for kids may end up hurting them

When parents in West Virginia give toys to their children, they trust that the toys will bring joy to their children's lives, not pain. Unfortunately, many children have ended up being hurt as a result of defective products designed specifically for them. Research shows that a child receives emergency room treatment one out of every three minutes as a result of an injury related to a toy.

Younger kids are more apt to end up choking on small toy parts. Meanwhile, older kids are usually injured while using scooters powered by feet, tricycles, wagons and riding toys. In addition, children of varying ages tend to become injured as a result of falls and collisions.

In 2007, a whopping 30 million individual toys of more than 100 different toy types had to be recalled due to defects. About 80 percent of injuries related to toys take place in the home, with injuries typically increasing during the summer when kids are playing outdoors. Unfortunately, although product recalls are designed to remove dangerous toys from households, many people simply aren't aware of recalls. As a result, the return rate for defective products is often low.

The thought of watching a child become injured as a result of defective products may naturally cause a parent in West Virginia to feel both frightened and angry. Manufacturers of toys and other products have a responsibility to make sure that the goods they produce are safe for members of the public to use. Parents whose children are hurt due to product defects have the right to explore their legal options in an effort to remedy the matter by holding the manufacturer accountable in court.
