Defective medical devices may cause serious health problems

Medical implants are made to help improve people's quality of life. Unfortunately, defective medical devices may end up making a West Virginia patient's quality of life worse. One type of medical device that has been known to cause physical issues is the metal hip implant.

The intent of a hip implant is to replace a person's hip joint. Metal hip implants feature a cup and ball that have been fabricated from metal, typically cobalt and chromium. Although metal implants were created to be sturdier than plastic and ceramic options, they, unfortunately, have been tied to many serious medical complications.

Another issue with metal implants for the hip is that the friction between the device's metal components may result in metallic debris being released into a patient's body. The condition, known as metallosis, may result in severe pain, swelling and even poisoning of the blood in some situations. Some patients who received defective implants have had to undergo a second surgery to replace their problematic implants.

West Virginia residents who experience health problems due to defective medical devices may opt to seek compensation through civil lawsuits filed against the implant manufacturers. Award may help to ease the financial pain caused by the use of the products. Monetary compensation cannot take away the difficulties that patients face as a result of having defective devices implanted in their bodies. However, a financial award may help these individuals to cover the costs of replacing the implants, if needed, as well as other expenses tied to the medical matters.
