Fire extinguishers by Kiddie are defective products

Consumers in West Virginia may be shocked to learn that a device that was designed to protect them in an emergency may actually end up causing an emergency. The device is the Kiddie disposable fire extinguisher, featuring a plastic valve. These defective products are known to potentially cause injury.

Officials said the disposable fire extinguisher's valve component is faulty. The extinguisher may not completely discharge if a person repeatedly presses and releases the lever in the middle of a fire-related emergency. A total of 31 Kiddie extinguisher models are part of the recent recall.

The recalled extinguishers feature black valves made by the company Zytel. They are silver, white or red in color and feature ratings of either BC or ABC. These recalled extinguishers were manufactured between July 2013 and Oct. 2014 and were sold between Aug. 2013 and Nov. 2014. The devices were marketed at Walmart, Menards and Home Depot as well as at other hardware, home and department stores throughout the United States. The products, ranging in price from $18 to $200, were also sold online.

Defective products can, unfortunately, cause people in West Virginia to suffer injuries. Treatment for serious injuries stemming from the use of hazardous products can be costly, and these types of injuries may even prevent an individual from returning to work and earning a living for a period of time. It is within the rights of a consumer who has been hurt by a product to assess his or her legal options in an effort to seek financial relief for any wrongs that have been committed. In appropriate circumstances, a products liability claim may be a viable remedy.
