Bikes included in recall of dangerous or defective products

Practicing bike safety while riding is crucial for West Virginia residents who enjoy their bicycles rides. At the same time, it is just as important for the bike itself to be safe. Unfortunately, when dangerous or defective products are at play, a faulty bike could turn a pleasant ride into a harmful tragedy.

Trek has recently issued a product recall that is the largest ever for the company and could possibly impact other manufacturers who have a product design that is similar to Trek's, which Trek claims in a vast majority of the industry. The company has recalled close to one million bikes due to an issue with the front wheel that could cause an accident. The affected bikes were manufactured between 2000 to 2015 and feature disc brakes on the front wheel as well as a silver or black quick-release lever. Trek says that the issue is not a defect in the manufacturing process.

Trek apparently became aware of the issue after a serious 2014 accident that resulted in the bicyclist becoming a quadriplegic. The company has also been informed of at least two other accidents that resulted in injuries. Trek urges consumers to contact a retailer immediately for a free installation of a new lever, which should take only a few minutes. A $20 coupon for merchandise will also be provided to the consumer.

If a bicycle is not in proper working order, it is virtually impossible for someone to ride his or her bicycle safely. Defects like this one with the quick-release lever can result in anything from minor injuries to death, depending on the exact circumstances. For West Virginia residents who have been harmed by a bicycle defect or other dangerous or defective products, it is possible to seek compensation from the manufacturer in civil court. This will hopefully not only ensure something like this doesn't happen again with the same manufacturer but will also provide the injured party with financial compensation to help cover medical expenses and other related damages.
