Dog bites boy, injures boy's face

Dog bites can easily lead to physical injuries, as well as emotional injuries and even death. Those who are injured by dog bites may have to live with disfigurement and the effects of lacerations, and they also may struggle with a fear of dogs in the future. The owners of dogs that end up hurting other people in West Virginia may be held liable for those people's injuries.

In one out-of-state case, a pit bull bit off the nose of a boy, age 2. The boy's family has filed a lawsuit for $1.5 million against the owner of the pit bull. The mother of the boy said that the dog attacked the boy at his grandmother's house, and the pit bull belonged to the boyfriend of the grandmother.

Following the incident, the dog was quarantined. It was then released since no one had actually witnessed the attack. However, the humane society did require the owner of the dog to keep it muzzled when it was being walked in public. The dog was later held by a county animal control department after reportedly attacking and killing a poodle in public.

If dog bites cause people to be injured in West Virginia, the injury victims have the right to explore all of their legal options. An injured party may file a personal injury claim against the owner of the dog, pursuing damages linked to the bite, based upon a showing of negligence. Liability needs to be established to the court's satisfaction before a judge will rule on the plaintiff's claims for financial damages.
