Recall of defective medical devices by Cook Medical expanded

West Virginia residents may be affected by a recent recall issued by Cook Medical. The medical device manufacturer recently decided to expand its recall of devices known as angiographic catheters so that it includes all lots of particular sizes. These defective medical devices were initially recalled back in July of 2015.

According to officials, the catheters have shown tip splitting or tip separation. This has caused the Food and Drug Administration to receive more than 40 reports about the devices. Tip splitting is particularly problematic because it can cause the device to lose its function.

Tip separation can also pose problems in that it might require medical intervention to remove the segment of the device that has separated. If this segment is not retrieved, blood may not be able to flow to organs. The voluntary recall covers various versions of the catheters, including the Shuttle Select Slip-Cath devices. These questionable products were sold from September of 2012 to September of 2015.

Patients who have used defective medical devices may end up suffering more harm than good. For instance, they may accrue hefty medical costs to address the problems caused by the devices, which could include procedures to have the devices removed. The ordeal may also lead to pain and suffering, as well as emotional distress. Fortunately, these patients have the right to seek to hold accountable the makers of these problematic devices via the West Virginia civil court system. They may ultimately be eligible for reimbursement of financial damages depending on the facts of their particular cases.
