Spinal cord injury victims at risk for dangerous condition

People in West Virginia who suffer serious spinal cord injuries have many adjustments to make in life. This is because a spinal cord injury can cause a variety of challenges, such as numbness, paralysis and even incontinence. Recent research shows that those who suffer from spinal cord injury are also at risk for a possibly deadly condition called automatic dysreflexia.

This condition can be described as a battle between two different nervous systems. One is the parasympathetic nervous system, and the other is the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic system releases adrenaline, constricts blood vessels and causes extremely high blood pressure. Meanwhile, the parasympathetic system brings a person's heart rate down.

Without receiving treatment, a person suffering from automatic dysreflexia may suffer from retinal hemorrhage and cerebral hemorrhage resulting from the very high blood pressure. In other words, the brain and eyes can begin to bleed uncontrollably, which can be fatal. This condition occurs most frequently in the first year following the event that caused a person's spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury can be life-altering and, understandably, cause frustration, especially if one's injury was caused by another party. If the injury was the result of another person's negligence -- for instance, the carelessness of a fellow motorist on the road -- the allegedly at-fault individual may be held financially responsible. Liability has to be established to the civil court's satisfaction in order for claims to be awarded. Financial restitution may help the spinal cord injury victim to cover medical costs and other expenses linked to such an injury in West Virginia.
