Auto defects in BMW crossovers spark recall

Drivers of BMW vehicles in West Virginia may be alarmed to learn that some crossovers manufactured by the company have recently been recalled. More than 188,000 X4 and X3 crossovers in total are being recalled in the US due to auto defects. Specifically, the purpose of the recall is to fix the lower anchor bars that are used to secure child-restraint seats, as these bars might be faulty.

The recent BMW recall covers X3s from model years 2011 to 2017 that were built from July of 2010 to April 2016. In addition, it covers X4s from model years 2015 to 2017 that were manufactured from March of 2014 to April of 2016. Officials said that the lower anchor bars can become ruined over the vehicle's life if used with an ISOFIX type of rigid-style connector child restraint system.

Although the rigid-style connector is primarily utilized in Europe, it is also used in the US. Lower bars that have been damaged can increase the risk of injury that a child suffers in a crash. As part of the recall, dealers are willing to weld a bracket to the bars as well as the vehicle at no cost to consumers.

Although auto recalls can certainly save lives and help to prevent injuries in West Virginia, sometimes auto defects are found too late -- after a person has already suffered an injury or lost his or her life. In these situations, the injured party has the right to file a liability claim, while a deceased person's surviving family members may opt to file a wrongful death claim. A preponderance of evidence is necessary to establish liability in this type of case, and only then will a judge determine claims for damages.
