Car wreck leads to 1 death, injuries, DUI charges

A recent car accident in West Virginia led to one death and injuries to at least 12 people. The car wreck occurred along Interstate 81. One person was charged with driving under the influence of drugs in connection with the accident.

According to police, one person, age 23, was driving while under the influence when his car hit a semi truck on a recent Thursday. The car then spun out of control, and a pileup ensued. Two semis, along with 14 other vehicles, were involved.

Twelve individuals received treatment and were released from the accident scene, while one person still remains in the hospital. Meanwhile, one man, age 24, passed away at the crash scene. The person believed to have been driving under the influence currently faces a charge of DUI of a drug as well as DUI leading to death. The highway where the crash occurred stayed closed for hours following the multi-vehicle collision.

The surviving family members of the man who died in the West Virginia car wreck may opt to file a wrongful death claim against the individual believed to have caused the crash. Likewise, injured parties may decide to file personal injury claims, pursuing damages. If the person who was arrested in connection with the crash ends up being convicted of his DUI-related charges, proof of the convictions may be presented in a related civil court proceeding in an attempt to establish liability in the accident. Only if liability is established to the court's satisfaction will claims for damages be decided.
