Defective car parts leading to record number of auto recalls

Many major auto recalls are causing major headaches for automakers and consumers alike throughout the United States, including in West Virginia. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, the number of vehicle recalls stemming from defective car parts reached more than 51 million units last year. This was a new record.

In total, carmakers announced about 900 recalls in 2015, which is also a new record. The previous record for the number of cars recalled and the quantity of recalls was set back in 2014 when more than 800 recalls that covered more than 50 million automobiles were announced. These figures actually only cover recalls in the United States, with the global numbers being a lot higher.

It is expected that vehicle recalls will also be high in 2016. This is due in part to defective airbag inflators by Takata, which led to major recalls in the years 2014 and 2015. NHTSA recently ordered vehicle makers to recall yet another 35 to 40 million of the Takata products in the U.S. by the year 2019, thus making this the biggest vehicle recall nationwide.

Sometimes defective car parts in West Virginia end up causing consumers injuries, which can be costly physically, emotionally and financially, depending on the nature of the injuries. In this type of situation, the injured consumer has the right to file a product liability claim against the reportedly negligent automaker, seeking the reimbursement of damages sustained. If financial responsibility is established to the satisfaction of the civil court hearing the case, claims for damages may be adjudicated.
