Dangerous products being recalled include hoverboards

West Virginians who own hoverboards may be affected by a current recall of the products. People who got hoverboards over two months ago are said to have dangerous products and are strongly encouraged to return them. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced that over 500,000 hoverboards sold by 10 companies are being recalled.

These self-balancing scooters, which are battery operated, are being recalled because they may burst into flames. The lithium battery packs are the problem. They are said to be poorly designed and have the potential to overheat. So far, the product defect has resulted in at least 99 incident reports regarding the battery packs exploding or catching fire.

Over 60 hoverboard-related fires that have taken place in 20 different states have been investigated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Altogether, the fires have caused property damage totaling over $2 million. Many of the major players in the industry, such as Razor and Swagway, are providing refunds, replacements or repairs depending on the particular model. The only safe hoverboards are those that UL, which was previously known as Underwriters Laboratories, has certified.

Manufacturers are expected to thoroughly test and ensure the safety of their products before making these products available to the public. Customers in West Virginia who are hurt or experience property damage as a result of using dangerous products may naturally feel violated and cheated. It is within their rights to assess their legal options in an effort to right any wrongs, which may include demanding payment of any monetary damages sustained due to the use of the dangerous products.
