Kanawha County vehicle accident sends motorcyclist to hospital

| Jun 21, 2012 | Motorcycle Accidents

A motorcyclist is reportedly recovering from some serious injuries after a head-on collision with another vehicle. Officials say the accident happened in St. Albans, West Virginia, on June 14 at about 4 p.m. along West Main Street.

Paramedics transported the victim a local hospital. Authorities have not yet reported the specific nature and extent of the injuries sustained by the bike rider in this motorcycle accident. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s office is investigating the crash, a process that typically involves taking witness statements from the parties, as well as inspecting the accident scene to try to figure out exactly how it happened that the two vehicles ended up colliding head-on into each other.

In accidents like this there is always the possibility that alcohol or drugs might have contributed to the motorcycle accident. There have as yet been no reports suggesting that such is the case here. Investigators are likely working to make the determination, however. If ultimately one of the drivers is found to have been intoxicated, then that increases the chances of that driver being held legally liable for causing the accident. Civil action to recover compensation for injuries could also follow.

Another factor that officials will be looking for is the possibility that one or the other of the two drivers involved in the accident failed to observe traffic laws regarding speed and lane usage. Many times in a collision at or near an intersection, a driver is found to have been negligent of a traffic law in a manner that results in serious injury accident.

Ultimately, disputes about liability can only be determined in a West Virginia court of law.
