An accident on U.S. 50 in West Virginia caused the rerouting of traffic through Pennsboro while authorities worked the accident. Authorities are still trying to sort out how the multiple car accident happened. Initial reports suggest weather may have played a factor in the crash.
The West Virginia State Police and the Ritchie County Sheriff's Office are investigating the accident. It was foggy on the morning the crash occurred, and the limited visibility could have played a part in the accident. Reports indicate that five people were injured as a result of the crash.
The extent of each person's injuries is not known, but all five that were injured were taken to area hospitals either by ambulance or helicopter. All that is known at this time is that there were serious injuries. However, one person's injuries were so severe that he died as a result.
It is unknown whether authorities are contemplating filing criminal charges against anyone involved in the car accident at this time. Once they are able to sort out what happened and when, that determination may be made. In the meantime, the family of the deceased and those who were seriously injured in the crash retain the right to file a civil action in order to recover their out-of-pocket expenses and any other damages they may have suffered in connection with this accident. Each party may want to seek advice regarding their rights and responsibilities under our state laws. Anyone filing either a wrongful death action or personal injury case may need assistance with filing their lawsuit to ensure their claims for relief are timely and properly presented.
