Most everyone in West Virginia knows that drunk driving is dangerous. When a driver gets behind the wheel of a car after they have been drinking, they dramatically increase the possibility that they will be involved in a car accident. Even if a drunk driver has an accident that seemingly only involves them and their car, negligent actions can also cause subsequent accidents as well.
This was the case with an accident that the West Virginia State Police are investigating that may have involved a drunk driver. A driver lost control of his vehicle and ran into a telephone pole, then left the scene. Police found several beer cans in the vehicle, and the driver could face charges as a result.
However, that's not the end of the story. The telephone pole that the driver hit fell into the roadway. Another vehicle was not able to stop in time to avoid hitting that pole. Both of the occupants of that vehicle had to be flown to an area hospital. Luckily, it has been reported that their injuries were not life threatening.
The driver of the first vehicle may be facing not only criminal charges, but also civil action in connection with the resulting car accident. Helicopter rides, medical bills and lost wages may be only some of the expenses that the occupants will be left with as they recover from their injuries. If they are able to show that the driver that hit the pole was negligent and that his actions caused or contributed to their injuries, they may be awarded those costs and damages by a Texas court.
