Car seats help keep children safe during car crashes

Lots of Charleston drivers do everything they can to stay safe in their cars and trucks. Many wear their seatbelts and drive vehicles with airbags to help prevent injury. They minimize distractions while they are behind the wheel, so they can keep their eyes on the road. But the reality is no amount of diligence can entirely eliminate the risk of getting into a car accident. For those drivers transporting babies and children, the thought of being involved in a crash with their little ones in tow can be frightening. This is why officials urge all parents and grandparents to make sure their children are properly secured in car seats every time they drive with their precious cargo.

Car seats can be tricky to install correctly, but the West Virginia Governor's Office of Highway Safety aims to help drivers by offering car seat classes several times a year. Instructors teach drivers how to make certain car seats are properly restrained by seatbelts as well as how to make sure the base of the car seat is secure.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13 is car accidents. Properly installed car seats can help reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries among children involved in auto collisions.

Regardless of a driver's best intentions, car accidents happen. If you were injured in an auto accident, you may be able to receive compensation. You might want to speak to an attorney to learn about your options.
