5 tractor-trailers involved in truck accident in West Virginia

Semi-truck accidents are often devastating. The sheer size of the "big rigs" can result in multiple injuries or even death. When more than one tractor-trailer is involved in a serious accident, the end result is often tragic.

According to a state trooper in West Virginia, a truck accident involving five tractor-trailers occurred on Dec. 18, just outside of Berkeley Springs on U.S. 522. The initial call for law enforcement was that two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision. When troopers arrived on the accident scene, they found five semis has been in the crash.

Police reports state that two semis were headed northbound when one attempted to pass another. In doing so, the passing truck side-swiped a semi headed in the opposite direction. That causes a tractor-trailer to rear-end the semi that was struck. Another truck was involved, too, but the driver of the fifth truck did not suffer any injuries, and the truck wasn't damaged.

The driver who caused the accident was arrested at the scene for a variety of charges, including reckless driving, improper passing and multiple violations for commercial vehicles. He is being held on $10,000 bail at the Eastern Regional Jail.

The driver of the semi-truck that was struck first suffered injuries of an unknown nature and was transported to a local hospital. The roadway was closed for several hours in order for state troopers to investigate the accident; however, there was also a significant amount of cleanup required before the highway could be reopened. The at-fault driver's truck was carrying 1,600-pound rolls of paper, which spilled out of the trailer when the accident occurred.

When a loved one is injured in a truck accident, compensation can be sought for a variety of claims, including medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress and other damages. A personal injury attorney with experience in semi-truck accidents can provide valuable advice, including whether the company that owns the truck is also liable.
