Husqvarna Professional Products claims to be the world’s largest manufacturer of outdoor power products, and many West Virginia homeowners are familiar with the brand. However, the company is currently making headlines over a lawsuit filed by a man who claims that the company manufactured a defective product that led to a severe injury. The lawsuit asserts that a safety switch installed on a riding lawnmower malfunctioned, resulting in the severing of the man’s knee cap.
The incident took place just two weeks after a man purchased a Husqvarna lawnmower, while the machine was still in ‘new, factory condition.’ The mower is equipped with a safety device that is designed to shut down the engine if the operator moves off the seat while the blades are engaged. The owner was using the machine to mow when he encountered a swarm of yellow jackets.
He jumped off of the mower in an effort to get away from the insects, but claims that the safety switch did not function as intended, and the mower blades continued to rotate. As a result, when the mower passed over his legs, both limbs were cut, and the knee cap of one leg was completely shorn off. As a result, the man required emergency transport by air to obtain lifesaving medical treatment. He can no longer walk without difficulty and cannot resume his normal level of activity.
Kawasaki Motors, manufacturer of the mower’s engine, is also named in the defective product lawsuit. Neither Husqvarna nor Kawasaki has issued a statement on the matter. The man injured in the incident is asking for unspecified monetary damages for the trauma and injuries he sustained when the lawnmower ran over his body with the blades still engaged. Owners of Husqvarna products in West Virginia and across the nation will likely continue to follow this case as it makes its way through the legal process.
