Driving while high leads to higher chance of a car accident

West Virginia readers may be aware that a few states have recently legalized the recreational use of marijuana, which may lead to an increased chance of a car accident. While this law has not passed in the state, it may be beneficial to know how driving while high can lead to a car accident or how it can impact the state's impaired driving laws. In fact, a new study has discovered that out of every ten fatal accidents, one of them involved a high driver.

This study could interest West Virginia readers because currently, the state is only one of a few who currently perform toxicology tests on drivers involved in fatal crashes. While the state has not approved legal use of marijuana, police have the capability to identify which drivers have been driving while under the influence of drugs. Based on the information gathered from the study, driving while high increase the chance of a fatal accident by as much as 13 times.

Drunk driving is already an epidemic in America. There is concern that this problem could increase if more states legalized recreational use of pot. This is because drivers may be tempted to abuse both drugs and alcohol, thereby endangering other drivers and themselves.

Anytime someone has been killed or injured by an impaired driver, it is not their fault. In fact, the families and victims could be eligible for certain types of financial compensation. If driving while under the influence of drugs does increase chances of a serious or fatal car accident as suggested by this study, these types of personal injury or wrongful death cases could increase.
