Traumatic brain injury in West Virginia requires medical care

The brain is one of the most important organs, affecting all of a human body's functions. However, its soft tissue makes it susceptible to even the smallest amount of pressure. This is why striking one's head against a hard object in an accident situation can be potentially detrimental to a person's ability to function normally. Traumatic brain injury receives special attention during Brain Injury Awareness Month, in West Virginia and elsewhere, due to the often severe nature of this type of injury.

Millions of people are affected by brain injury. This type of injury essentially can occur any time the brain moves. Fortunately, these individuals may receive assistance through rehabilitation and acute care.

The brain is so essential because it controls how a person thinks, feels, sees and speaks. Even a person's ability to breathe is dictated by the brain. Unfortunately, even what people consider to be minor injuries can have major effects on the brain's operation.

Brain injuries can be the result of falls, vehicle accidents and assaults. Learning that a family member is suffering from a traumatic brain injury is often heartbreaking, especially if the injury was caused by the negligent or reckless actions of another party. Under these circumstances, it may be possible to pursue a claim against the party who is believed to have caused the injury, seeking financial damages to help with medical expenses and other monetary losses tied to the incident. If the available evidence demonstrates that another party was negligent and thus at fault, this may form the basis for a finding of financial liability in a West Virginia civil courtroom.
