How traumatic brain injury can impact West Virginia victims

Suffering a leg injury in a vehicle accident certainly can change a person's life by affecting his or her ability to walk. The same goes for suffering injury to an arm or another limb. However, suffering a traumatic brain injury can be especially life-altering, as it can leave a person incapacitated not only physically but also mentally in severe situations. These traumatic brain injuries may not be immediately visible in West Virginia.

Traumatic brain injuries pose unique challenges for victims because it may not be clear how these individuals can recover from such a setback. This type of injury, which traditionally has been labeled a concussion, essentially is a blow to the head. This blow leads to bruises and cuts in the brain.

This blow affects a person's ability to function properly. In fact, a biochemical rush of sorts happens following the trauma, and may cause further damage to the brain for a week. The parts of the brain that are most vulnerable in this situation are the lobes that control emotions, language, memory and an awareness of self. Traumatic brain injuries also can cause deep depression in patients.

People who have suffered a traumatic brain injury in West Virginia can undergo neurological rehabilitation in an effort to function independently. The goal is to improve these individuals' quality of life. If their injuries happened because someone else was careless -- for example, while driving on the road -- then this other party may be sued for financial damages to cover related medical expenses. There must be plenty of evidence that the brain injuries indeed were caused by the negligence of another party to the accident.
