Hummus dips nationwide recalled as defective product for listeria

West Virginia residents may be interested in learning that roughly 15,000 pounds of hummus have been recalled across the United States. Primarily, the hummus dips were sold at Giant Eagle, Target and Trader Joe's. The reason for the recall is due to the potential contamination of listeria, which now deems the hummus dip a defective product.

Numerous hummus dips were affected by this recent recall. These dips include, but are not limited to, Giant Eagle Garlic Hummus, Target Archer Farms Roasted Garlic with Roasted Garlic Tapenade and Trader Joe's Edamame Hummus. There were many other dips included.

Listeria is a very serious bacterial illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the symptoms of listeria illness may include fever, diarrhea and muscle aches. The most vulnerable to becoming ill are young children, senior citizens, pregnant women and anyone who has a weak immune system. The CDC also says that a listeria infection may cause pregnant women to have a miscarriage or stillbirth.

At this time, no illnesses or deaths have been reported. However, consumers nationwide are advised not to consume the hummus dips. The product should be disposed of immediately or returned to the store where it was purchased for a refund.

If West Virginia residents or loved ones have become ill due to these hummus dips or another defective product, there may be legal options available. After all, listeria occurs when preparation, handling or storage was not handled appropriately. In fact, one may have a civil liability case against the manufacturer and possibly the retailer for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
