Bounce house accident may lead to traumatic brain injury

Bounce houses are often popular attractions at birthday parties and other fun events for children. However, a child in West Virginia may start out enjoying his or her time in a bounce house, only to suffer a serious injury. One boy in another state recently suffered a traumatic brain injury and had to undergo surgery after getting hurt in one of these houses.

Kids can easily be injured in a bounce house if the house is carried off by the wind and ends up in the air. Children can also get hurt simply by striking their heads against the ground or by running into other people in the closed-in space. One mom said she didn't realize that her child had been injured in a bounce house until she realized that he was acting peculiar. She visited a medical center with her son, and physicians discovered blood outside his brain.

Doctors thus had to perform surgery on the boy, who is 8 years old. More than 30 kids visit emergency rooms each day as a result of accidents involving bounce houses, researchers said. In fact, an accident involving this kind of play equipment sends one young person in America to the hospital every 45 minutes.

Sometimes, an accident in a bounce house happens because the victim himself or herself was not careful. However, in other cases, a child may end up suffering a traumatic brain injury because the person responsible for maintaining the property was negligent; for example, the unit may not have been tied down properly. This may be grounds for a civil claim. If West Virginia parents of an injured victim can establish by a preponderance of the evidence that the accident happened due to the negligence of another party, they may be entitled to a judicial award of damages for the financial losses sustained.
