Traumatic brain injury and anemia often happen simultaneously

One blow to the head can have an impact that, unfortunately, lasts a lifetime in West Virginia. This is because there currently is no cure for a brain injury. However, modern technologies may help to improve a traumatic brain injury victim's quality of life in the wake of such a massive injury.

One major issue that sufferers of neurological injury often develop is anemia, with these individuals frequently arriving at the emergency room with additional injuries that can cause a large amount of blood loss. Anemia can actually make a person’s brain injury worse because blood loss leads to lower hemoglobin levels in red blood cells. Hemoglobin is a metalloprotein that contains iron.

The decrease in the patient’s blood pressure stemming from his or her blood loss, along with the dip in his or her hemoglobin levels, can decrease the flow of oxygen to the patient’s brain. Blood transfusions or anemia drugs have traditionally been used to address the anemia situation in brain injury victims. However, doctors today are looking for more effective yet low-risk treatment plans for managing brain injuries in patients early on.

Even though a brain injury can limit a person’s ability to think or act, the person can learn to cope with it as best as possible with professional help. If another person caused the injury as a result of a vehicle crash or some other type of act of negligence, a personal injury claim for monetary damages may be an appropriate legal remedy. A civil court in West Virginia will decide monetary damage claims in favor of the injured person if there is sufficient proof that the other party’s negligence was the proximate cause of the accident and injury that resulted.
