Car accident leads to teen bicyclist's death

It's imperative that motorists are cognizant of bicyclists on the side of the road. Failure to exercise caution around them can lead to a car accident that ends up causing major injuries or fatalities. One boy unfortunately died in a bicycle accident in West Virginia recently, understandably leaving the boy's family and community in shock and reeling in grief.

Police are investigating the crash involving a high school student. The boy died after a vehicle struck his bike, police said. The 15-year-old was riding the bike on a Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened after 3 p.m., according to police. Another student from the same high school may have been operating the vehicle that hit the teen's bike. Charges had not been filed in the accident case.

The family members of the bicyclist understandably may be filled with grief and even anger in light of the car accident. If the driver of the car is discovered to have been operating the vehicle negligently -- such as speeding or driving while distracted -- proof of this may be offered in a related civil court proceeding. This may be done in order to try to establish his liability in the crash. If and only when the judge finds that the car's driver is liable for the boy's death, damages may be awarded to the plaintiff. Financial restitution in this type of case can help with funeral expenses and other costs linked to the accident; it can also help to address pain and suffering caused by the West Virginia collision.
