Auto defects involving air bags lead to expanded Honda recall

People in West Virginia who drive Honda vehicles may be interested to learn that the company recently decided to expand its car recall to every U.S. state. This recall is in connection with potentially lethal air bags. This could mean that several million automobiles will end up being recalled as a result of Honda's auto defects.

Honda made this decision after Japanese auto supply business Takata -- which makes Honda's air bags -- decided not to comply with a demand from the federal government that the auto recall be expanded beyond multiple southern states. Compliance with this demand would have meant that all automakers who had installed Takata's air bags would have had to abide by the recall order. Takata officials felt that it would be best to recall vehicles only in areas of the United States with persistent humidity and high heat.

Takata reported that injuries and deaths related to the air bags occurred mostly in Puerto Rico and Florida. The air bags have been known to spray passengers and drivers with shards of metal. However, others argued that a recall that involved the whole nation may prevent more deaths. One out of five air bags produced throughout the world are produced by Takata.

Auto defects can cause injury or even death if they are not addressed in time. Those who have suffered injuries as a result of a defective air bag or other automobile issue have the right to file a personal injury suit against the responsible company, seeking the reimbursement of monetary damages. Meanwhile, people who have lost loved ones as a result of an auto defect may file a wrongful death claim in West Virginia.
