Comfort Research defective products may pose suffocation hazard

A product that initially seems harmless might end up causing serious injuries or even death if it is found to be defective. One product recall that may affect West Virginia consumers involves bean bag chairs. These reportedly defective products were manufactured by Comfort Research and can pose a choking or suffocation hazard to children.

Officials reported that each chair, filled with vinyl polystyrene, has an exterior-cover zipper. A child may open the zipper and then attempt to crawl inside the chair. Once inside the chair, the child can become trapped and end up choking on the foam beads inside the chair or suffocate while inside the bag.

The diameters of the affected chairs are 98 inches and 88 inches. They come in various patterns and colors, including ruby red, royal blue, purple, hot pink and a variety of sports-related patterns. The chairs were sold throughout the United States in several retail stores, including Target, Wal-mart, Meijer and Burlington Coat Factory from 2010 to 2013 for $30 to $40. Consumers are encouraged to get in touch with Comfort Research to find out how to disable the product's zipper permanently.

Learning that children have been injured by defective products can be disconcerting, and it is natural for an injured child's parents to want to seek justice. It is within the rights of the parents to file a claim against those responsible for the unsafe product in a West Virginia civil court. Although compensation will not reverse the negative impacts of using a defective product, damages awarded due to a claim that is successfully litigated may help a family pay medical expenses tied to the situation, as well as provide compensation for other losses associated with the product.
