FDA Provides List of Defective Medical Device Recalls

 | Dec 26, 2014 | Uncategorized

Consumers rely on a system of checks and balances in order to ensure that the products they consume are safe to use. These checks and balances are implemented by the government as well as the businesses serving the public in West Virginia and every other state. However, lately there has been particular attention being paid to defective medical device cases.

This is because the frequency of recalls for medical devices and drugs have increased considerably. Part of this trend is due to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) taking a more vigilant stance after an outbreak of fungal meningitis. The outbreak, which had been related to a particular compounding pharmacy, resulted in more than 60 people dying. Also, 750 people had reportedly become sick as a result of the outbreak that happened in late 2012.

On the other hand, most people may not realize that the FDA makes concerted efforts in bringing information to consumers regarding recalled medical devices, pharmaceuticals and other products through various channels. One way the FDA does this is through its website as well as various other government websites. The FDA allows consumers to browse all recalls issued within the past 60 days.

However, many times, this crucial information does not reach consumers in time in West Virginia. This can result in injuries and even death in the worst-case scenarios. On the other hand, if this does turn out to be such a case, those injured may want to consider filing defective medical device lawsuits. Additionally, the families of those who have died as a result of defective medical devices may want to pursue wrongful death lawsuits.
