Spinal Cord Injury Patients May Benefit From Adaptive Cycling

 | Oct 5, 2014 | Spinal Cord Injuries

When people are paralyzed as a result of spinal cord injuries in West Virginia, they may lose hope of ever being able to walk again. However, new technologies are trying to improve their lives. Adaptive equipment is making it possible for those with a spinal cord injury to finally take part in sports again, such as cycling.

One of the adaptive prostheses includes a hand bike that has two to four wheels. There are also trikes that allow the rider to sit up and use his or her feet rather than using hands to operate the bike. One tandem bike additionally enables able-bodied parents to pedal their special-needs children with conditions such as cerebral palsy.

Yet another type of adaptive prosthesis that can benefit those suffering from spinal cord injury is a recumbent bike, which allows a person to be in a reclining position. These types of bikes are able to be designed to suit any person’s ability level. For instance, a person who cannot control his or her trunk well may benefit from a bike that can recline more.

Adaptive cycling is opening more doors for people with a spinal cord injury to stay active even when they are unable to walk. This can help to have a better mental outlook and improved fitness. If a person’s spinal cord injury stemmed from someone else’s careless behavior, such as negligent driving on the road, the person also has the right to sue the other person in West Virginia. Awarded damages may further help the victim to address emotional stress caused by the situation as well as afford medical treatments needed to address the injuries over time.
