New discovery may bring hope to spinal cord injury patients

People with spinal cord injuries often feel as though their lives will remain forever impacted by the incident that led to their injuries in West Virginia, whether it is a car accident or a slip-and-fall incident. However, new research could drastically impact treatment of spinal cord injury. Scientists recently identified an immune response that takes place after one's central nervous system has suffered an injury.

This immune response was not previously known. According to researchers, an injured nervous system communicates with one's immune system in a language not previously recognized. This leads the immune system to be quickly activated, and immune cells produce a particular molecule that is critical for nervous system recovery following trauma.

By harnessing the newly discovered immune response, physicians might have the ability to develop brand new and improved treatments for injuries to the spinal cord. They may also be capable of developing tools for predicting how people will respond to this treatment. Those with conditions including Lou Gehrig's disease, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease may benefit from this discovery as well.

The new discovery may be exciting for spinal cord injury patients who are eager to take advantage of new treatments that will increase their quality of life in light of their injuries. Those who incurred their injuries as a result of someone's careless behavior have the right to try to hold the allegedly at-fault party accountable in civil court. The plaintiff must be able to competently prove that his or her injuries were the result of someone else's negligence in West Virginia.
