Spinal cord injury victims may benefit from new surgical device

The thought of not being able to walk or even lift one's arms is understandably terrifying for individuals in West Virginia. Unfortunately, this is a reality for many individuals who have suffered spinal cord injuries. One device, however, is giving spinal cord injury victims hope that they may be able to move again.

The device is basically scaffolding that is small and rice-shaped. Made by a company called Invivo, the device is implanted on one's spinal cord. The goal is for the scaffolding to help an injury victim's nerve endings to regrow, thus repairing the part of his or her spinal cord that was damaged.

One man recently became the first person to undergo the revolutionary surgery involving the scaffolding device. The man, who injured himself in a dirt bike accident, said that he has seen improvements since undergoing the surgery a few months ago. During his therapy sessions, he has had the ability to move his legs, and he can also walk under water.

When a person's spinal cord becomes damaged, the person may suffer paralysis or other life-changing physical conditions, depending on the nature of the injury. Many of these types of injuries are the result of vehicle accidents, which sometimes happen due to the negligence of another driver. In this situation, the spinal cord injury victim may decide to file a personal injury claim in a West Virginia civil court against the driver deemed to have been negligent. Financial restitution in a successfully litigated case may help to cover a victim's medical costs and other losses related to the life-changing accident.
