Hip replacement products among defective medical devices

Medical devices in West Virginia, such as a hip replacement device, may help to restore physical function in a patient and thus improve his or her quality of life. However, defective medical devices do the opposite, making a person's quality of life worse. According to a recent report, certain hip replacement devices have the potential to cause problems in a handful of patients.

Stryker Corp. is one manufacturer of hip replacement devices known as the AGB II and Rejuvenate hip stems. These products were placed on the market back in 2007. However, people who have received these devices might have to have revision surgery done due to the products' defects.

The issue with the devices is that they are prone to fretting, a process where a joint in the product sheds tiny chromium and cobalt particles. These metal particles can then diffuse into tissue nearby. The body views these pieces as foreign bodies; as a result, it attacks them, which can result in health problems such as psuedotumor creation, inflammation, swelling and pain. Doctors continue to closely follow patients' body metal levels to determine if their implants have failed.

People who end up with defective medical devices in West Virginia have the right to seek damages through a civil lawsuit. No amount of money can remove the physical and emotional difficulties associated with the use of a malfunctioning hip replacement device or other medical device. However, it can help patients cover the expense of having it replaced or addressing medical issues caused by it.
