West Virginia residents who love chicken may want to pay close attention to this post. According to CNBC, almost 2 million pounds of Aspen Foods chicken have been recalled due to being dangerous or defective products. There is an apparent risk of Salmonella infection, which is one of the most dangerous bacterial foodborne illnesses.

The specific product being recalled is the raw, breaded chicken that has been stuffed and frozen. It was produced between the middle of April and July 10. The packages have a “best if used by” date of anywhere between July 14 and Oct. 10 of this year. 

The recall is particularly alarming because another manufacturer, Barber Food, also made a recall recently of its own frozen, stuffed and raw chicken. Its chicken, like Aspen Foods’ chicken, may have been contaminated with Salmonella. Together, the recall totals 3.7 million pounds of chicken. As of this post, there have indeed been reports of illnesses related to the Salmonella-contaminated chicken from Aspen Foods. The extent of the illnesses suffered is unknown.

Salmonella infection has symptoms that range from abdominal pain to diarrhea. A fever is likely expected within 12 to 72 hours after exposure. In most cases, people will recover without serious medical treatment. However, a risk of serious illness exists for those who have a weakened immune system, including children and the elderly.

Chicken contaminated by Salmonella can be extremely dangerous. The Aspen Foods facility where the chicken was produced may not have enforced appropriate safety standards, which apparently resulted in the outbreak of the disease. West Virginia residents who fall ill after consuming a manufacturer’s dangerous or defective products may be entitled to compensation to help pay for medical expenses, long-term care and/or other damages incurred.
