Dog bites injure woman, another dog

Getting bitten by a dog, whether in West Virginia or elsewhere, can be a traumatic experience on many levels, including physically as well as emotionally and even financially. Unfortunately, one woman in another state experienced this firsthand after suffering multiple dog bites. The incident occurred on a recent Friday morning.

At about 9 a.m., the 50-year-old woman and her friend were walking a dog, using a leash. Authorities said that, all of a sudden, a Labrador mix quickly left a house near them and ran toward them. The Labrador mix belonged to a neighbor of the woman.

The Labrador mix, which was loose, ended up biting the woman's dog on its rear legs and neck. The woman received bites to her left thigh, left shin and cheek. She was also bitten on the right calf while she was attempting to separate both dogs. The city animal control division continued to investigate the matter. The woman required medical treatment for her injuries, and her dog also required treatment at a veterinary hospital.

According to West Virginia's dog bite statute, any dog owner who allows his or her dog to run at large is held liable for any injuries caused by the dog while it is running at large. Dog bite injuries may require major medical treatment and thus be costly, depending on the severity of the bite. People in West Virginia who have suffered injuries from dog bites -- or these individuals' parents, if they are minors -- may opt to file personal injury claims, seeking an award of monetary damages from a civil court. If awarded, based upon a showing of negligence on the part of the dog owner, monetary damages may help to pay for required medical care and even help to address pain and suffering as well as emotional distress stemming from the dog bite incident.
