Defective medical devices by Medtronic recalled

Some individuals in West Virginia may be affected by a recent recall of medical devices used for implanting heart valves. The defective medical devices manufactured by the company Medtronic are said to feature particles that may lead to health issues. More than 7,000 of these devices have been recalled.

The recalled device is an Evolut R transcatheter aortic valve along with a special kit that is used to implant it. These two items received approval to be sold domestically in June 2014. In the US, systems specifically intended to be used in clinical trials were recalled. The particulate identified in some of the devices may cause a blood stream blockage known as an embolism.

There have not been any reports of adverse effects in patients as a result of the defective devices. The Evolut R valve enables a physician to implant a new heart valve without having to perform an open-chest surgery. It was designed for use in patients with aortic valves that are so narrow they limit blood flow through the heart, possibly causing heart failure.

Individuals in West Virginia who end up being injured by defective medical devices are entitled to seek redress for their monetary damages stemming from the device. If they are successful in their liability lawsuits and are awarded damages, the damages may be helpful for covering the expense of medical procedures required to address the injuries caused by the devices. No amount of money can completely take away the emotional and physical difficulties caused by a defective device, but it may help the victim achieve a sense of justice in the ordeal.
