Spinal cord injury may be treatable using cancer genes

Based on recent research, over 12,000 people in the United States suffer major injuries to the spinal cord every year. Spinal cord injury can be both financially and physically vexing for people in West Virginia. However, new research may be a promising step toward finding a viable cure for injuries to the spinal cord along with the paralysis caused by them.

Researchers have determined that the particular processes that end up going wrong in someone with cancer are actually the same processes that can be engaged for the purpose of repairing a patient’s nervous system. Medical practices currently cannot heal spinal cord injuries, as nerve cells cannot regenerate in one’s spine. However, cancer is essentially the growth of cells, albeit unregulated, so cancer genes may offer a key to treating spinal cord injury.

Recent research is receiving financial support from a seed grant from a paralysis foundation. The foundation was founded by a man who was paralyzed in an accident. The foundation’s goal is to help to finally fix injuries to the spinal cord for good.

The new developments in spinal cord injury research may give hope to people suffering from these types of injuries that their lives will get better one day. Until then, though, they must deal with the challenges that come with these injuries. If an individual’s spinal cord injuries were caused by another person’s negligence — such as carelessness behind the wheel — then the injured party has the right to file a personal injury claim against the allegedly at-fault party, pursuing damages.
