According to statistics, there are over 12,000 new spinal cord injuries each year in the United States, including in West Virginia. Two university graduates recently said they are developing bikes that provide electrical stimulation for those suffering from this debilitating injury. These bikes may help spinal cord injury victims to move much more easily.
The company created by the two graduates is called Myolyn. When the pair started the company in 2013, one of the men had been doing some work in the area of electrical simulation technology. He had previously done some exoskeleton-related work involving robotics with the goal of helping paralyzed people and amputees to experience more functionality.
Rather than focusing on the use of exoskeletons to help the body to move, they explored the possibility of having a paralyzed person operate an exercise bike. The company has developed prototypes of the technology over the past two years and is hoping to get its bikes on the market soon, following FDA approval. In West Virginia and across the country, the bike may help paralyzed individuals to take control of their health.
Technologies designed for victims of spinal cord injury are giving them hope by potentially making it easier for these individuals to live more independently. Sometimes, these individuals’ life-altering injuries are the result of the carelessness of another party, such as the operator of a motor vehicle. In this situation, the injured individual may choose to file a personal injury claim against the reportedly negligent party, seeking damages that — if achieved — may help the victim to cover his or her losses stemming from any negligence that caused or contributed to the injuries suffered.
