Complaints about auto defects involving software on the rise

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing number of consumer complaints about vehicle software, which impacts people in West Virginia and other states. In 2016 so far, these complaints are on pace to reach the record-setting number of 2015. The number of complaints related to software-related auto defects that were received during this time last year was a little more than 200.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received more than 600 complaints total by the end of 2015. This count surpassed the previous record of more than 500 that was set back in 2014. Over the past five years, consumers have made more than 2,000 complaints with the NHTSA with regard to vehicle software.

Consumer complaints help manufacturers of automobiles to better anticipate vehicle recalls and figure out how best to achieve customer satisfaction long term. With software issues becoming more common in cars, customers' trust in new vehicle technology may start to erode. In addition to an increase in software-related complaints about vehicles, there's also been an increase in vehicle recalls in general. That increase was a whopping 45 percent between the years of 2014 and 2015.

Auto defects can be problematic because they may lead to debilitating injuries or even deaths if they are not caught quickly enough. Even if companies have announced recalls to fix the defects, some customers in West Virginia and other states might have already gotten hurt or lost their lives as a result of these vehicle issues. It is within the right of an injured party to file a personal injury claim in such a case, while the loved ones of a person who has died as a result of vehicle defects may file a wrongful death claim, seeking financial damages.
