Sony recalls dangerous products: battery packs

A recent product recall issued may impact some West Virginia consumers, particularly those who use laptop computers. Sony recently announced a recall of nearly 1,700 battery packs that are used in 18 different models of the company's VAIO series laptops. The dangerous products are being recalled because they have the potential to overheat.

The batteries being recalled are lithium-ion batteries that Panasonic made. Since they may overheat, they pose fire and burn hazards. The computers that use these batteries were sold to customers at electronic stores throughout the nation, including Sony's retail stores and Best Buy.

The batteries were additionally sold online at Sony's website and at other sites between February of 2013 and October of 2013. These batteries, which were sold separately as well, ranged in price from $550 to $1,000. Consumers are encouraged to immediately quit using the problem battery packs; the company is offering free replacements.

If consumers in West Virginia use dangerous products and suffer harm as a result, it is within their rights to file product liability claims against the makers of these products. In a successfully litigated case, a monetary award may help to cover related medical costs, the loss of wages due to missing work and other expenses tied to the use of the dangerous product. No amount of monetary compensation can undo the events causing the victim's injuries. Nevertheless, financial damages may help to address emotional distress as well as pain and suffering caused by the situation and ultimately enable the injury victim to move forward more easily.
