Car wreck involving semis leads to 1 death, 8 injuries

A person died and several were injured in a chain-reaction accident that recently occurred in West Virginia. The car wreck took place on a Tuesday afternoon. It involved six semi-trucks and a couple of cars and occurred along Interstate 64.

The head-on accident took place at around 3:30 p.m. when one of the truck drivers was driving west along the interstate and breached the road's center line. That is when it struck the second truck, which was going in the interstate's eastbound lane. Police said the trailer that entered the opposite lane separated from its tractor before landing on a hillside. One of the truck drivers, 42, passed away in the collision after his truck caught fire. Meanwhile, eight people were transported to the hospital.

The massive crash required crews to fight a fire on the interstate for multiple hours, with drivers being left stranded for many miles. In fact, some drivers spent over eight hours stuck in traffic. The road could not be reopened until crews were able to clean up diesel fuel and repave the road in the areas where the fire ended up damaging the road surface.

Any truck drivers injured in the West Virginia accident may pursue workers' compensation benefits, while any individuals in the cars who were injured may choose to file personal injury claims, seeking damages. If the truck driver who reportedly caused the accident was the one who died, a lawsuit may still be filed against his estate as well as his employer. Meanwhile, if the truck driver who is said to have caused the car wreck survived, both he and his employer may face personal injury claims filed by the car passengers, and they may also face a wrongful death claim filed by the surviving loved ones of the deceased truck driver. Liability has to be established to the civil court's satisfaction before claims for damages will be adjudicated.
