FDA strengthens kidney damage warning on diabetes drugs Invokana, Invokamet and Farxiga

Invokana and Invokamet (canagliflozin), Farxiga, and Xigduo XR (dapagliflozin) are drugs used to lower blood sugar in Type 2 diabetes. They are very popular drug, but unfortunately they have been associated with acute kidney damage. There was already a warning about this risk, and on June 14, 2016, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it was strengthening its existing warning. If you have been harmed by Invokana, Farxiga, or another diabetes medication, you may be entitled to substantial compensation.

Type 2 Diabetes Drugs

Invokana, Invokamet, Farxiga, and Xigduo, are in a newer class of diabetes drugs called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. They are used to lower blood sugar in Type 2 diabetes patients by preventing glucose from being reabsorbed into the blood by the kidneys. Instead, glucose is excreted through the kidneys in urine.

SGLT2 inhibitors have been linked to serious side effects including:

Kidney Damage Warning

The FDA says it received reports of 101 confirmable cases of acute kidney injury in canagliflozin and dapagliflozin users from March 2013 to October 2015, and that there a probably more cases the agency is unaware of.

The FDA urges users of Invokana, Invokamet, Farxiga and Xigduo to seek immediate medical attention if they experience signs or symptoms of acute kidney injury, but also say they you should not stop taking your medication without talking to your doctor because you could experience a dangerous rise in blood sugar. It advises doctors to monitor for decreased kidney function and, if there is acute kidney injury, to immediately stop the drug and treat the kidneys.

In acute kidney failure, your kidneys suddenly stop filtering waste products from your blood. This can cause a rapid buildup of toxins in your system. It is a medical emergency, and it can be fatal. While some people fully recover with prompt and intensive treatment, many survivors are left with permanent and very serious injuries.

Symptoms of acute kidney damage include:

  • Decreased urine
  • Fluid retention, typically seen as swelling in the legs and feet
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or pressure in the chest
  • Seizures - in severe cases
  • Coma - in severe cases
