Thousands of women file lawsuits against the maker of the Essure Permanent Birth Control System

By: Attorney Bobby Warner

When you chose to undergo a permanent birth control procedure, you likely do so in full faith that it will result in a safe and effective means of preventing pregnancy. What you might not have known is that procedures involving permanent fallopian tube implants such as Essure have reportedly caused a number of serious side effects and complications in thousands of women ranging from chronic pelvic pain to even death.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration first approved the Essure Permanent Birth Control System in 2002. Bayer bought Conceptus, the device's original maker, in 2013. The companies merged. More than half a million American women use Essure to prevent pregnancy. The system consists of two metal coils that doctors implant in each fallopian tube. Scar tissue develops in the tube and prevents fertilization.

Bayer markets the device as a non-invasive form of permanent birth control that is nearly 100 percent effective and has a quick recovery time.

But thousands of women disagree. They claim the device ruined their lives and caused them permanent injuries including autoimmune diseases, perforated organs and severe pelvic pain. Through social media, these women who call themselves "E-sisters" share their negative experiences with the device. One group on Facebook called Essure Problems has over 31,000 members and is still growing.

The FDA has received more than 5,000 reports about Essure since 2002, many of them coming after Bayer took over. These adverse events led several women to file lawsuits against Bayer. Victims of Essure claim their health problems were ignored, and many said they felt discriminated against by doctors and the FDA. They claim Bayer failed to warn them and is guilty of negligence.

For women injured by the device, turning to the legal system may be the only way to receive compensation for medical bills and lost quality of life. Many people file lawsuits because they want to prevent this product from harming others.
